Time to Roll

Tuesday is try something new day for MoFo. And not just try some new recipe or try to cut my carrots in a different way, it needs to be a bit more involved then that. If there is one thing that I've been putting off trying for a long time. One thing that I bought specialist equipment for that's just been lying around. One thing that I had the ingredients delivered for and then ignored for months on end it's this:

Yes sushi. To achieve my cute little carrot and avocado rolls I pulled out each of my recipe books with a sushi recipe, and read the back of all my packets for extra tips. I ended up cobbling it together a bit. I followed the instructions off the back of the rice packet for the rice, seasoned it to the instructions from the vinegar bottle and rolled it mainly with the aid of How to Cook Everything: Vegetarian.

And let me tell you it it wasn't all that hard. With results this impressively adorable you would expect hours of toil and the type of attention to detail that I, frankly, can't be bothered with. But after the first roll or so it's actually quite intuitive. The hardest part of the process is having the same conversation about weather or not sushi can be vegan over and over again.

Moral of the story: give it a go.

  1. Oh, I know that conversation. No, sushi does not mean fish!
Anyway, your sushi looks delicious! I'm still trying to get myself to like nori, but I do enjoy making the rolls.

  3. I've never had sushi (vegan or otherwise) and I've never made sushi (vegan or otherwise) but I really really want to. Yours look so good and you've given my confidence a boost to give it a go. I'll add it to the list!

  5. I love making sushi. There are some good ideas for fillings on Post Punk Kitchen - sweet potato with sesame and shitake is my fave. I learned how to roll after watching one of their shows. It's not online yet at their new sit but is hear at Google Videos.
